The piece is beautifully carved and displays fantastic detail. Melanie has signed the back of the piece and I will provide a copy of her biography to the winner. RAVEN Raven is a dynamic character and a prominent figure within the accounts of the aboriginal people of the Northwest Coast although his prominence does diminish from north to south. Despite the differing roles this creature plays within 1st Nation worldviews; Raven is admired universally for his intelligence, inquisitiveness and creativity and as a result appears more often within the works of indigenous artists than any other character of their oral traditions. In the northern regions of the coast, Raven is a trickster, transformer, teacher, and chief spirit. He is a notorious schemer, cunning to a fault, impulsive and without remorse. Within Coast Salish oral traditions, Raven is considered to be a mischievous character; however, he is not a prestigious transformer. Raven is identifiable by a thick beak that tapers slightly and ends in a blunt tip. Raven is occasionally, but not often, depicted with very small ears and wings typically folded tight against his body. MELANIE RUSS Affiliation: Haida Birthplace: Skidegate, BC Melanie is from Skidegate, located on Graham Island, in Haida Gwaii. She is the daughter of very well-known Haida argillite artist Ed Russ, who began teaching her to carve when she was just a young girl. He passed away recently, but Melanie feels that "he is still here with showing me the way me as he said to me to look at the rough argillite, then close my eyes, and I will see the design come out". Her mom, Faye Russ, also taught her to carve and continues to be her inspiration. Melanie works alongside her mom, creating beautiful argillite sculptures together. She currently lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, with her children. Coastal Treasures: Native Art Carousel Payment: Please contact me for additional payment options.
